We are looking for a Network Management / Network Monitoring Engineer to provide second and third line software support, platform and network monitoring and system administration. Working in our Systems Administration Team you will have the responsibility in setting up, developing and maintaining our monitoring systems. You will also be supporting users to troubleshoot any problems that arise, as well as being involved in designing new networks and services making sure that they can be monitored correctly.


Other responsibilities range from systems administration with our cloud-based environment (AWS) to deploying new monitoring nodes across our network. This a challenging and varied role, which consists of working across departments, as well as a point of escalation for provisioning issues with Tier 1 service providers and dealing with the development and management of our internal systems built on a range of languages and hardware. The successful applicant will be working in a small team, using the latest technologies and innovations including Open Source solutions like LAMP and Zabbix to commercial software such as Splunk, SolarWinds, Wavefront etc.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage/expand our monitoring platforms to ensure that key services are monitored, and alerts are delivered to necessary personnel (e.g. Network Operations Centre)
  • Maximizes network performance by monitoring performance; troubleshooting network problems and outages; scheduling upgrades; collaborating with network architects on network optimization.
  • Liaise with other Network Engineering teams to determine their requirements and identify further opportunities for automation
  • Report network operational status by gathering and prioritising information and managing projects
  • Maintaining any relevant network monitoring systems up to date
  • Creating Apps/Dashboards/Integrations in Splunk to display relevant information to different Teams
  • To assist in data and server migrations
  • Automation of any network monitoring agents and collectors via Ansible (or similar) to keep inventory and ensure standardization of our various systems and services
  • Point of escalation for software/monitoring issues from the Network Operations Centre, as well as owner in the escalation to relevant software providers where necessary
  • Develop solutions that are reusable and can be broadly applied to common network problems
  • Automation of processes and systems that are not yet properly implemented
  • Keeping up-to-date with current and emerging automation technologies and trends



  • This role is a member of the Systems (IT) Team reporting to the Systems and IT Support Manager. Working with Software Architects and other members of the Systems and Development Team, as well as our NOC and Architecture Network Engineering Team.
  • Other Key members across the entire Business including: Sales, Operations, Network Planning and our emergency response team.
  • 3rd Party, including Partner escalations, as well as with our Software Suppliers.
  • The candidate would need to be articulate and willing to liaise with people from these groups.


Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong understanding of foundational network concepts such as the OSI Model, TCP/IP, Routing, IPSEC, NAT and SNMP protocols.
  • Full understanding of MIBs, OIDs and the translation and applying them to different use cases
  • Working experience with Tier 1 monitoring systems (Nagios, Splunk, munin, Zabbix, SolarWinds, Wavefront)
  • Proven experience in automating a large-scale network environment
  • Problem-solving in a dynamic environment
  • Scripting knowledge in at least one scripting language (Perl/python/ruby/shell) for quick prototyping of solutions is a must
  • To build and configure equipment and systems to business specifications
  • Experience in system administration, LAMP, and supporting applications on Linux / Ubuntu / RedHat
  • Experience with Oracle and MySQL databases, simple database administration
